What are the different types of management system audits?

We encourage you to prepare what you expect from the auditor, what you need, and what happens at each stage of the certification process for a smooth and stress-free experience. This article briefly describes the different types of Management system audits your organization is expected to receive when seeking the first ISO 9001 certification and the subsequent audit cycle after certification.


Internal Audit:

The internal audit is a self-audit carried out by the company itself at least once a calendar year. They run on-site and help determine suitability, effectiveness, and opportunities for improvement. Bypassing an internal audit, the organization can compare the quality management system with the required standards and prepare for a certification audit. Internal audit has no "interests." Complete to meet the requirements of the standard and serve as a learning opportunity for your organization. During this process, we want to find as much as we can so that we can discover what the accredited auditor sees and prepare ways to improve it. The certified auditor, or external auditor, has more authority in a sense. This is because he is the representative of the certification body and the person who decides whether to obtain ISO9001 third-party certification.


External Audit:

External audits are performed by an external auditor associated with the contracted certification body. The external auditor conducts a certification or oversight audit at least once every calendar year to determine whether the organization is recommended for ISO certification or retains its current certification. To audit best practices, external auditors must perform audits based on a set of rules from their ISO standard and obtain the strict qualifications set by the certification body.


Certification Audit:

A certification audit is carried out every three years to verify the validity of the entire QMS against the ISO9001 standard. Third-party certification audits are performed by IAF-MLA signatory certification bodies accredited to ISO 17021, the standard for management system certification bodies.
